How to Choose an Online Therapist

Finding the right therapist for your needs

Last updated: January 2025 | Medically reviewed

Consider Your Needs

Think about what you want to work on, any preferences for therapist characteristics (gender, age, background), and what therapy approaches interest you (CBT, DBT, psychodynamic, etc.).

Check Credentials

All therapists on major platforms should be licensed. Common credentials include LCSW, LMFT, LPC, and PhD/PsyD. Verify they're licensed in your state.

The First Session

Use your first session to assess fit. Do you feel comfortable? Does the therapist listen well? Do they explain their approach? It's okay to try multiple therapists.

Switching Therapists

Most platforms make it easy to switch therapists if the fit isn't right. Don't stay with a therapist who doesn't feel like a good match—finding the right fit is crucial for success.
